First Quarter Tax Bills Mailed Out

Release Date: 02/01/2010

The Bayonne Tax Collector's Office announced that the City has mailed property tax bills for the first quarter of calendar year 2010. The amount due is slightly lower than for the last quarter of 2009. This current bill represents one-quarter of the taxes paid by property owners in calendar year 2009.

There is not yet a property tax rate for 2010. The County of Hudson sets a tax rate each year during the summer.

In a letter accompanying the property tax bills, Mayor Mark A. Smith said, "My Administration has made a commitment to keep property taxes flat this year during these trying economic times."

Mayor Smith continued, "For years, the City of Bayonne has been relying on one-shot-revenue fixes to fill our persistent structural deficit. We are working hard to end this practice. We have been working hard to cut expenses, shrink the size of municipal government, and get spending under control. We also need substantial, new development that will produce reliable, recurring revenue for the City of Bayonne."

He added, "We are working diligently to restructure the master plan for the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor to place the emphasis on job-creation and new tax ratables instead of housing. We expect our efforts to bear fruit in the near future. New development will enable us to move away from the continuing dependence on one-shot revenue sources and toward a more stable future."

The nominal due date for first quarter property taxes is Monday, February 1. There is a grace period for payments through the close of business on Wednesday, February 24. Payments may be made by mail or in person at City Hall, 630 Avenue C, or at Bayonne branches of Bayonne Community Bank (BCB).

By state law, quarterly payments received after the close of business on Wednesday, February 24, will incur interest charges dating back to Monday, February 1, 2010, the nominal, legal due date for the first quarter. For anyone making payment in person on February 24, the Tax Collector's Office strongly recommends paying at City Hall.
