Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has authorized Bayonne to receive $1,293,000 of federal stimulus money to resurface part of Avenue C. The project will cover paving and concrete work from 1st Street to 18th Street. Smith said, "This paving project is part of my Administration's continuing effort to resurface all of Avenue C. I would like to thank President Barack Obama, U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez, and Congressman Albio Sires for supporting the economic stimulus legislation that will make this work possible." Smith continued, "I would like to thank the NJDOT for authorizing this project and City Engineer Don Schlachter for his hard work on the grant application."
Under the terms of the grant, the City of Bayonne must spend local funds, and then apply to the NJDOT for reimbursement. The NJDOT supervises the distribution of federal stimulus money for transportation projects in New Jersey.
The portion of Avenue C from 18th Street of 24th Street was just repaved in 2009. Other streets will be resurfaced with NJDOT funds in 2010. Additional paving projects will be announced.
City officials expect the Avenue C paving project to start later this year, when the weather is warmer. Resolutions relating to the paving grant and its management will be on the City Council's agenda at its regular meeting on January 20.
Smith concluded, "My Administration will continue to apply for additional grants from all levels of government. I am especially interested in additional grants that would enable us to resurface the rest of Avenue C."
