Mayor Mark A. Smith is calling upon the Bayonne community to respond to calls for needed assistance in the wake of the Haitian earthquake tragedy. "One cannot help but be moved by the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Haiti," said Smith. "It is incumbent upon us who have so much to respond to the needs of those who have so little in this crisis." The island nation was hit by a strong earthquake that left the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, in shambles.
Smith said Bayonne was committed to helping out on several fronts. Bayonne firefighters trained in urban search and rescue are on standby to fly to Haiti to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. The Mayor authorized up to ten experienced firefighters to respond in cooperation with the United States Department of Defense and the Center for International Disaster Information.
Mayor Smith will be meeting on Tuesday with community representatives to plan appropriate, local financial support for Haitian relief. Details concerning fundraising will be announced next week.
