Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the crime rate declined by 11.8% in Bayonne in 2009. Violent crime was down by 11%, while non-violent crime decreased by 11.9%, Smith said, "The decrease in crime last year is very encouraging. I would like to thank the members of the Bayonne Police Department for the outstanding job that they do in fighting crime."
The number of motor vehicle thefts declined from 121 in 2008 to 82 in 2009, a drop of 32.2%. The number of robberies fell from 105 to 86, a decline of 18%. Incidents of simple assault decreased from 420 to 364, a drop of 13.3%. Incidents of burglary dropped from 237 to 209, a decrease of 11.8%. Cases of larceny declined from 636 to 584, a decline of 8.1%. The number of aggravated assaults decreased from 96 to 92, a drop of 4.1%.
There were 4 incidents of arson in 2008, versus 2 in 2009, a decline of 50%. There were 7 incidents of rape in both 2008 and 2009. There were no murders recorded in Bayonne for either 2008 or 2009.
Mayor Smith concluded, "During 2010, the Bayonne Police Department will continue working hard to maintain public safety. This year, our police officers will be using new patrol cars, new equipment, and improved communications. We will continue our efforts to give the police the tools they need to get the job done effectively."
